Our Story

P.K. Sindwani, a local resident since 1986, found himself facing a possible lay-off in 1990.  At the same time P.K. and his wife, Indira, realized there was a need within their own residential area.  Seeing the economic conditions at that time, caring for the place they chose to make their home, and having decided to raise a family, they realized the two of them would need to see to their own future… and together they could help their family AND their community.

Taking matters in hand, when the potentially devastating lay-off occurred on June 20th, 1990, P.K. was prepared. The very next day, loans were approved and on November 8th, 1990 The Little Professor, a small franchise book store, opened its doors.
Soon afterward, P.K. and Indira began working to help others through the book store.  Caring about the people and businesses located where they had chosen to raise their children, Monica and Nicky, led them to believe it is important to not just be in a community as wonderful as ours, but to also be a part of it. Focusing on excellent customer service and special orders not only for individuals, but also corporations was not enough.  So they began programs like the Battle of the Books (to celebrate literacy), story hour (for young children), and the Angel Tree (to provide books for local children at Christmas time).

Within a few years P.K. and Indira realized they had made the right choice and they decided to make the book store their own.  In 1996 their little community book store became the independent Trappe Book Center and in 1998 they expanded to more than double their size.  Then again, in 2011, necessity and opportunity combined to allow the store to move to the Town Providence Center in Collegeville, PA, expand and become 8,000 square feet with the addition of a cafe and a children's center, and become the Towne Book Center & Cafe.

As an independent store, the Sindwanis are free to assist local residents and other businesses in the area even more.  Keeping their strong foundation, the store has programs to assist families in saving money on required reading while simultaneously earning funds for their schools, offers special fund raisers tailored to and for local charities, sponsors a public book club which is still going after 10 years, opens its doors for tours and special events, and runs its own fundraisers to benefit our community.  Always seeking new ways to be involved, we look forward to the opportunities of the future.
